In an announcement on its website Tuesday, Adobe said that it will stop updating and distributing its Flash Player plugin by 2020, a feature that has been around 1996.

In its statement, Adobe said that Flash has become redundant due to open standards like HTML5, WebGL and WebAssembly bringing in similar features without the need to be installed as plugins. Even though some websites still rely on Flash to display animations and games, a growing number have recently switched to using other options that won’t slow down visitor’s devices, or bug them to install additional software.
