Since Elon Musk's acquisition of Twitter, the platform has become a progressively challenging environment for journalists, leading many to believe that it has started to limit the visibility of posts containing links to outside websites. On Sunday, Musk verified that the platform has lowered the priority of posts with links, which has traditionally been the method used by journalists and other creators to distribute their content.
Editors for platforms and audiences at The Guardian and The Boston Globe have openly observed increased visitor numbers to their news websites from Bluesky compared to rivals such as Threads, Meta’s alternative to X. Rose Wang, the COO of Bluesky, referenced statistics from the Guardian, stating:
“Our goal is for Bluesky to be an excellent space for journalists, publishers, and creators. In contrast to other platforms, we do not lower the visibility of your links. Share as many links as you like — Bluesky serves as a gateway to the open web."
Bluesky, originally developed as a project supported by Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey, who severed connections with the company in May, opened to the public last year as an invitation-exclusive platform. Among its initial users were Black, trans, and politically progressive individuals. Journalists associated with and reporting on issues impacting marginalized groups have discovered that Bluesky offers a significantly more friendly atmosphere.
